a little update

navigation system and battle system are almost completed, at least they work on a 2D display

now working on integrating those things into the 3D system that basically works

still loads of stuff to do before getting to a beta version but as in august i'm off for holidays, not much gonna happen

working on AI, and let me tell you that stuf is staring to work, AI can build a town hall and all required homes to house the population.... but, yes but, there is sooooooooooo much more to it, another few months and AI building gonna be awesome... now just gotta figure out how to make the Ai do wise choices if more than one construction is possible... needs and ressources is a whole problem to figure out what can or must be done

Of course, diversity is always a good thing. Instead of cookie cutter towns, let it either make mistakes, or give some towns extras. Like one town is all religious with shrines and churches. Another is evil with stocks and hangman scaffolds, heh.

This is basically the idea, each country has it's own means of evolution, as you say, religion can be one of them, some might swear on booze, others on technology, others on diplomatics, other on war, etc, you will never know from the start who your enemy will be

Stuff that the player can and must do:
Research in technology
Taking care of his people (building stuff, schools, churches?, and much more)
Build an army
Do diplomatics with who you can, kill the others or just buy their land of you think you have a chance at it...
Trade...
Aaaannd more...
